Lots of you, I know, know who the Twits are but if you don’t then here is a little information all about them and the Roald Dahl story.

A hideous, vindictive, spiteful couple known as the Twits live together in a brick house without windows. They continuously play nasty practical jokes on each other out of hatred for one another, ranging from Mr. Twit hiding a frog in his wife’s bed that he claims is a monster, to Mrs. Twit tricking her husband into eating worms in his spaghetti. They also keep a family of pet monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps. The Twits, who are retired circus trainers, are trying to create the first upside-down monkey circus, leaving the monkeys to stand on their heads for hours on end. Mr. Twit coats tree limbs with a strong glue Hugtight in hopes of catching birds for Mrs. Twit to make into a bird pie. The monkeys try to warn the birds, but since the monkeys speak in an African language, the English birds cannot understand them, so the poor birds wind up boiling in Mrs. Twit’s pie. One week, the Roly-Poly bird flies in from Africa to visit the monkeys, and acting as an interpreter of languages, keeps the birds from sitting anywhere Mr. Twit has spread glue. Mr. Twit tries several times to catch the birds, spreading the glue on an increasing number of perches, but the Roly-Poly bird changes his warning to reflect the new traps. The Muggle-Wumps, tired of being forced to stand on their heads, with the help of the birds use Mr. Twit’s powerful glue to attach the couple’s furniture to their ceiling while they are away to trick them into thinking that they are upside down and that their ceiling is actually their floor. The birds also smear glue on the Twits’ heads, which permanently fixes them to the ground when a panicked Mr. Twit suggests that they stand on their heads so that they are ‘the right way up’ after they first walk into the upside down living room. Stuck on their heads with all their weight pressing down on them, they catch the ‘Dreaded Shrinks’ (a disease that Mr. Twit had convinced Mrs. Twit that she had earlier in the book as one of the pranks), their bodies compressing ‘downwards’ so that they eventually shrink away into nothing, leaving the Muggle-Wumps free to escape.

Tasks

This week I would like you to:

  1. Write a letter to someone from Class Two. If you know their address then you can send it to them or wait and give it to them at school. You could even take a picture of it and send it to me and I can try to get it to them. Who knows, maybe they will write back!

2. Write a haiku poem

Here is a video all about what a haiku poem is. Watch the video to 2:00 to learn about how to create a haiku poem and then get going. Haikus are usually about nature, so get outside and start writing, following the 5, 7, 5 syllable rule.

Brain & Senses

Your brain is the most complex part of your body, it performs a large number of amazing calculations every second, taking in information from the outside world in the form of senses and allowing you to quickly respond to various situations. Use this senses lesson plan to try out some fun brain activities and teach them more about brain functions such as memory, taste, sight and touch.

Introduction:

  • It is said that as far back as 10000 years ago people had a strong awareness of the importance of the head and brain.

  • The word ‘brain’ originated from the ancient Egyptians.
  • Early philosophers such as Socrates and Aristotle wrote and made theories regarding the human brain although Aristotle also believed that the heart played a crucial role in human intelligence.
  • The human brain interprets the world around us in many different ways. These processes are researched in the study of neuroscience.
  • Can you name some of the ways that humans process information from the world around us? Memory, reflexes, senses etc.
  • Physical differences in the brain of different species go much deeper than the obvious size and shape aspects, feel free to discuss more about this, the senses and brain functions in general.

Sight Activity:

  • Another way that our brains make assumptions is through optical illusions. Our brain tries to fill in the gaps, especially as we have been taught to use specific shapes and angles to tell us about size. Your brain is always looking for blank spaces and filling them with information. Our brains are always trying to recognise things in our environment and create meaning out of them. It is part of our survival instinct. Sometimes your brain leaps to the wrong conclusion and you get a surprise. Magicians and illusionists are experts at using this to their advantage.

Taste Activity:

  • Show your child a coloured sweet or fruit, red for example. They have to guess what flavour it might be. After they have guessed, give them all one of these sweets or fruit and see if they were right. Talk to them about how our brain sometimes makes assumptions about certain things that we have a memory of.

Memory Activity:

  • Test the short term memory. Show them a number of different objects and tell them to remember as many as possible. They have only one minute to look at them. Hide the objects after one minute has passed. Let the kids write down as many things as they can remember on a sheet of paper. Can they remember all of the items? Are there any that were forgotten by everyone? What could they do to improve their memory?

Touch Activity:

What areas of our bodies are most sensitive to touch? Our Hands? Feet? Fingers?

  • Bend a paper clip into the shape of a U with the tips about 2 cm apart.  Make sure the tips of the U are evenly aligned with each other.
  • Lightly touch the two ends of the paper clip on the back of your partners hand. Your partner should not be looking as you do this. Do not press to hard!
  • Try and make sure that both tips touch the skin at the same time. Ask your partner if they felt one or two pressure points.
  • If your partner felt one point, spread the tips of the clip a bit further apart, then touch the back of your partners hand again. If your partner felt two points, push the tips a bit closer together and test again.
  • Measure the distance at which your partner can feel two points.
  • Now try the same thing on different parts of the body and record the distances.

What’s happening?

The receptors in our skin are not distributed in a uniform way around our body.  Some places, such as our finger and lips, have more touch receptors than other parts of our body, such as our backs.  That is one reason why we are more sensitive to touch on our fingers and face than on our backs.

Did any of you try the cosmic yoga from last week? If you did, let me know how you got on.

It is so important to keep active at home – Your heart rate should be raised every day for 15-30 minutes – I would like you to create a log of how you have got your heart rate up each day.

It could be from going for a long, speedy walk, or doing 100 star jumps or even by creating an obstacle course in the garden.

RE – Churches have closed

The church of SantAmbrogio

In many countries the churches have closed due to the lockdown situation. I would like you to have a think of what this means for Christians, how might they feel without having this holy place to go to and what they could do instead of going to church to worship.

I would like you to come up with a solution poster/leaflet/powerpoint/mind map of how Christians can worship without going to church, putting a positive outlook on this situation.

Geography and Art – Flags of the World

For your geography lessons this week, I would like you to research flags around the world. Pick a flag from a country you have visited. Can you find out a bit about who designed the flag/when it was created and why were those colours chosen to represent that country? You may want to start with the Great Britain, England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland flag.

Once you have learnt about your selected flag, can you create a pop art piece, based on the flag? Link the two subjects together to create a master piece. To learn more about another pop art style, have. a look at Roy Liechtenstein’s work. He used many dots to create his pieces of pop art. Forest School Activity

I would like you to create a den of some sort for yourself. It could be a den to have a picnic in with your family. It can be in or outdoors and big enough to fit the desired amount of people in comfortably. Be creative with what resources you use. Blankets, pillows and sheets are a good place to start – make sure you check with an adult if you are able to use them!

Phonics

The Department of Education has teamed up with UK teachers to create videos for children to learn their letters and sounds phonics. Starting from Monday, videos will be uploaded daily lessons will be uploaded to this channel.
