Hello Class 3, I hope you are all well. This week we are going to be looking at one of my favourite places, the Elan valley Dams. The dams have a lot of history as well as being a great place to walk, cycle, see nature, explore and have fun. I have been lucky enough to walk in the footings of the old village and see the dams completely frozen. In the school holidays we also walk through Pen-y-Gareg dam as it is open to visitors and we have been on the Dam Busters walk.
This week I would like you to research into why the Elan Valley dams were chosen to supply water to Birmingham. Using this information, I would like you to pretend you are a villager, and write a letter to the water board stating if you are for or against the dams being built and your reasons why. Please include facts in your letter to back up your opinion.
Questions to think about:
- Was it fair that only the landowners were given financial compensation and the tenant farmers and smallholders were evicted without anything?
- Was it fair that the people who were employed by the two large estates also lost their income and accommodation?
- Was it fair that the owners the two big estates were given compensation and had to start over and find somewhere new to live?
I have included a these website links to help you: http://history.powys.org.uk/history/rhayader/elanmenu.html https://www.elanvalley.org.uk/discover/reservoirs-dams
Please take a photo of your letter and email to myself and Mrs Manning. I look forward to reading your letters and hearing your point of view. Take care, Mrs Waters
