Science

Primary Science Quality Marks have been awarded to 425 infant, junior, primary, middle and special schools to celebrate a commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning. So far, since its national launch in 2010, over 5000 schools across the UK have achieved a prestigious Primary Science Quality Mark.

The Primary School Quality Mark programme ensures effective leadership of science, enables schools to work together to share good practice and is supported by professional development led by local experts. It encourages teacher autonomy and innovation while at the same time offering a clear framework for development in science subject leadership, teaching and learning. Schools that achieve PSQM demonstrate commitment and expertise in science leadership, teaching and learning.

Science at St George's CE Academy

At St George's CE Academy, we have designed our science curriculum with the intent that all children, regardless of background, will develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Through different types of science enquiries children will answer scientific questions about the world around them.

We aim to ensure that our science teaching and learning activities encourage children to be curious and to ask questions about the world they live in.  Our aim is to encourage children to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes, so they think critically and have a deeper understanding of the world now and equip them for the future.

Science holds numerous opportunities for children to be active learners and to learn experientially. They work independently and with others, widen their horizons, develop communication and language skills, apply mathematical and scientific knowledge, plus explore their own creativity. Children are encouraged to ask their own questions, try ideas and learn from mistakes, innovating and suggesting improvements.

Children are encouraged to strive to create the best outcomes they can of which they will be rightly proud and thereby developing positive attitudes to learning.

Below you can find a variety of links that will direct you to websites where parents can find  interactive games, activities and ways that you can support your children with science that will support their learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Explorify is a website that is free to use and has a range of activities to support children with their science learning. Favourites at St George’s are the ‘Zoom in, Zoom out’ and ‘Odd One Out’ activities
