Chester Zoo

Class 3 had a great time at Chester zoo last week. The children loved seeing all the animals and learning some very interesting facts from the zoo staff. Apparently Kimodo dragons tend to eat their babies, so the babies hide in trees to escape from them! The class thoroughly enjoyed finding animals that linked to our class reading book, the Explorer. A great day was had by all!

So far, Class 3 have learnt 19 facts. They haven’t just learnt them, they are also exploring the facts and their structure. Each week, two new facts will be added to the wall until it is complete!

Class 3 go to Liverpool!

Class 3 had a wonderful trip to the Liverpool World Museum at the end of last term. We had a brilliant workshop with Phil who brought Ancient Egypt to life in a theatrical workshop. He described and involved the children in the process of mummifying a body which the children named Ronaldo.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about the process of mummification. Following this, we had the opportunity to explore the Egyptian exhibit where we could see the real mummies!

Solids, liquids and gases

This week in science, we were exploring the properties of a gas and comparing them to the properties of solids and liquids. The children worked in groups and became the particles. They thought about how particles are arranged in the different states and how this results in their different properties.

Time for baking!

Yesterday, Class 3 had a go at baking Egyptian flatbreads. They worked in groups weighing, measuring, mixing and kneading to create the dough. While the dough rested, they explored how the Ancient Egyptians farmed the ingredients and compared their methods to those used today. They looked at how olive oil, salt and flour were produced.

Pentabus workshop with Dux

Every Monday, Class 3 has been very lucky to take part in a drama workshop with Dux. Some of you may have met Dux at the Michaelmas fair with UBI!

Dux has been leading drama sessions which encourage the children to think creatively, using vocabulary in new and fun ways. The children play many games, encouraging them to use words and sometimes create their own! They have also been introduced to lots of Dux’s friends like the BFG and Cookie monster, who also challenge the children to explore words.

In the main parts of the sessions, we are focusing on the story of the Egyptian Cinderella. Recreating the story in new and fun ways which we hope to share with you in the coming weeks.

Egyptian sunsets and jewellery

Over the past couple of weeks, Class 3 have been immersing themselves in the Egyptian topic. They designed and created their own version of an Egyptian necklace using materials they could find in the classroom. The children used images of real Egyptian necklaces as inspiration, thinking about animals they could include.

The children also considered the colours of a sunset, to recreate a sunset scene in Egypt. They focused on moving their brushes in long, sweeping motions to mimic that of a sunset. They used black paper to create the silhouettes of landmarks in Egypt.

Building a Royal Shang dynasty tomb

We have been learning all about the Shang dynasty during our history lessons. We have been exploring their traditions and beliefs, including how they buried the members of the royal family. In particular, we have been looking at the tomb of a Shang Queen, priestess and general, Fu Hao that was discovered in China. The children have recreated the tomb of Fu Hao and included some of the artefacts that were discovered. This included dogs, pottery, jewellery and weapons.

Pizza making

Class 3 have been focusing on making pizzas for their DT project this year. They researched people’s pizza preferences by creating an online questionnaire and then designed their own pizzas. They chose their favourite toppings and were very creative with their shapes! Yesterday, they made their pizzas using their designs. They created their dough from scratch and decorated with their toppings.

It was a lot of fun and the pizzas smelt delicious!
